All Aboard the Art Bus: Exploring Austin Through Art

RCYF campers took to the road with a fun art bus tour, custom organized with Austin arts organization Almost Real Things.

Our first stop was one of Austin’s newest public-art destinations—the Wishbone Bridge and Absolute Equality: Unity Tunnel. With Zach as our guide, campers learned the fascinating story behind the years-long project and discovered how artists and community members helped transform an everyday public space into a colorful work of art.

Next came an amazing stop: Touch the Art at Canopy. Forget the usual “please don’t touch” gallery rule! This interactive exhibition invited students to touch, explore and experience art in unexpected ways. Campers were especially inspired to learn about contributions from young artists from the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

Our final stop was Blackfeather Gallery, where campers viewed Andrew Long’s flower-filled Bloom exhibition—and received an incredible bonus: a personal conversation with the featured artist himself about his work and creative process.

From massive mosaics to touchable creations and conversations with working artists, our Art Bus Tour showed campers something important:

Art isn’t just something you see. It’s something you explore, experience and create.
