Art Hacks Week: Where Ordinary Things Became Extraordinary

What can you make with an old CD, some yarn, a cardboard box or a handful of popsicle sticks?

During Week 2 of RCYF Summer Camp, the answer was: just about anything!

This week we challenged campers to look at everyday materials differently and discover how creativity can transform something simple into something completely new.

Our elementary campers turned old CDs into wind chimes, created piñata crafts, experimented with balloon painting and mixed art with plenty of movement and recreation.

Our MS/HS campers tackled more complex challenges. Teams designed castle replicas using limited materials, while our Marble Maze Challenge transformed ordinary cardboard boxes into intricate courses engineered to move a marble from one corner to another—in the fastest time possible!

Week 2 also marked the debut of RCYF's new summer gardening program, giving every camp group dedicated time with our gardening instructor to explore flowers, plants, nature and the outdoors throughout the summer.

Then at the end of the week, art left the classroom.

We boarded a special Art Bus for a custom tour through Austin's creative community, exploring the new Wishbone Bridge and Unity Tunnel, experiencing interactive artwork at Touch the Art, and visiting Blackfeather Gallery.

Week 2 proved an important lesson:

Creativity is everywhere—you just have to learn how to see it.
